Plates with NIJ level 3 body armor ratings come in both ceramic/composite and steel versions. Ceramic/composite usually consist of aluminum oxide combined with either ultra-strength polyethylene or aramid synthetic fiber backing. According to the NIJ, level III body armor will protect against all handgun rounds and rifle fire up to 7.62mm armor-piercing FMJ ammunition. To achieve Level III body armor plate ratings, they must be capable of withstanding six NATO 7.62 hits at a velocity of 2,780 fps.
